For the first time since 2013, the Villanova Wildcats lost on their home court. To whom? Wildcats fans certainly wont forget the Butler Bulldogs anytime soon as they halted the Wildcats 48 home game win streak and have been the only team to beat Villanova all season long. How have they done it? Big second halves, spreading the wealth and holding Villanova to a staggering 12/50 from 3 pt line in both games combined. This second time around was eerily similar to the previous time these teams met. Villanova lost by 8 points, again. Villanova only hit 6 3 pointers.. again. Villanova was out rebounded.. again. See what I am saying? Very similar. The Bulldogs got a great showing from junior forward Kelan Martin (22 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast) and freshmen guard Kamar Baldwin (15 pts, 2 reb, ast, stl, blk). Senior guard Avery Woodson sank all 4 of his free throws en route to 13 points and added a rebound and block. Senior guard Kethen Savage, despite only scoring 5 points, came away with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, which is huge considering as a team, Butler had 6 steals. All in all, Butler played a very good game against the 2nd ranked team in the nation. As for Villanova, these guys are still a team to be reckoned with as their only losses have come to the hands of Butler. For the Wildcats, sophomore guard Jalen Brunson (24 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, stl) and senior guard Josh Hart (18 pts, 3 reb, ast) had great games but combined for 8 of Villanovas 15 turnovers. Senior forward Kris Jenkins (8 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast) scored on 5 of his 6 FT attempts but went just 1-8 (1-5 3 pt range) from the field in 32 minutes of play. These numbers make you wonder how Villanova will perform should they meet a team similar (or dare i say, the bulldogs themselves) to the bulldogs in the March madness tournament. In the grand scheme of things, teams facing Villanova will want to take a page from what Butler has done to look into stopping them. Let’s not forget they are 26-2 and have alot of basketball left, including the tournament. As for Butler, this win solidies them as a threat. They not be up there with the Wildcats, UCLA Bruins, Kansas Jayhawks, but these guys can ball. And when theres an underdog who can win games like this entering the tournament, dont be surprised if these guys bust your bracket! It was a great game and both teams look forward to closing out their schedules on high notes. Villanova looks to take on 23rd ranked Creighton and the Bulldogs look forward to taking on unranked Xavier. Both games should be won by the higher ranked team, but do be on the lookout for a potential upset, as this IS college basketball. Great game and hope these teams can win there next games!
