Talk about an exciting week for college basketball fans! The Gonzaga Bulldogs are #1 in the polls since March 2013. They continued their dominating ways by beating the Santa Clara Broncos soundly 90-55. Senior guard Jordan Mathews led the scoring for the Bulldogs with 16 points on a very efficient 5/7 shooting including 4/4 from the free throw line. He was also able to grab 6 rebounds and dish out 4 assists. Sophomore guard Josh Perkins (15 points, 3 reb, 8 ast) and excellent off the bench freshmen forward Zach Collins (14 points, 8 reb, 1 blk) both had great games for the Bulldogs. Starting center, senior Przemek Karnowski (try saying that 3 times fast) chipped in with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists as did freshmen forward Killian Tillie off the bench with his 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. As you can see theres alot of spreading of the wealth, which is vital to any sport as it makes it tough for defenses to key on a guy when there’s no clear cut superstar on a team. That is what has helped the Bulldogs reach that 24-0 mark, especially considering that games consist of 2 20 minute halves. As for Santa Clara, nice outputs from sophomore guard KJ Feagin (18 points, 3 reb) and senior guard Jared Brownridge (13 points, reb, 2 ast, stl) weren’t enough as the Broncos didn’t muster up much from other players (rest of starters + bench players total scoring output combined: 24 points) and so if they want to look to get into the tournament, things will have to change fast. As for Gonzaga, they need to not get overconfident and continue spreading the wealth and playing their game. I should note that, while Gonzaga was ranked #3 last week, losses by previous #1 Villanova (to Marquette), #2 Kansas (to #18 West Virginia) and #4 Kentucky (to Tennessee) helped propel Gonzaga to the #1 seed (that undefeated record helps as well). Moving forward, Gonzaga looks to take on 11-12 Loyola Marymount and avoid an upset while the Broncos take on the 17-8 San Francisco Dons hoping to upset the Dons. Both games will be tonight and should be intriguing matchups. Overall a solid showing by the top team in the country and a good fight put up by their interconference rival.
